Africa's role in fighting Malaria

A group of foreign countries and organizations/agencies have just pledged $225 M to subsidize cheap malaria drugs for developing countries. Of the 35 countries responsible for 98% total malaria deaths world-wide, 30 are in Africa. April 25th, 2009 is WORLD MALARIA DAY; 614 DAYS to the first important malaria milestone of universal coverage by December 31, 2010.
Summary of Universal coverage goals:
(1) 80% of people at risk of malaria using appropriate vector control methods
(2) 80% of malaria patients diagnosed and treated with effective anti-malarial drugs
(3)100% of pregnant women receive intermittent prevetive treatment
(4) 50% reduction of malaria burden
Do you think Africa is up to the challenge of achieving this milestone? What do you think African countries can do? What are our responsibilities individually and collectively? How can we influence participation and action on the part of people and governments in Africa? Share your thoughts/opinion
